MALAKAL, South Sudan — It was Christmas morning, and the eight Americans and 10 South ­Sudanese orphans lay huddled under their beds, shivering with fear. Outside, rival soldiers were trying to kill one another. Heavy gunfire exploded in waves, rattling the windows.
