Moderate Uighur scholar faces trial in China that critics say highlights repression

BEIJING — China’s most prominent Uighur scholar, Ilham Tohti, is to go on trial Wednesday on charges of separatism and inciting ethnic hatred, in what human rights groups see as a sign of Beijing’s intolerance to peaceful criticism and increasing repression of its mainly Muslim western region of Xinjiang.
