Putin travels east, comments on terror attacks
MOSCOW — President Vladimir Putin made a surprise New Year’s Eve visit to Khabarovsk, about 3,800 miles east of Moscow, diverting attention from the misery of suicide bombings in Russia’s heartland and casting himself as the leader of a resilient country capable of overcoming all misfortune. The Winter Olympics were clearly on his mind.
